Phytochemical Analysis and Antibacterial Activity of Ethanolic Extract of Brassica oleracea L. Var. Italica
The present investigation deals with qualitative analysis of secondary metabolite and antimicrobial activity of Brassica oleraceae L. var. Italica leaves extract belongs to family of Brassicaceae. Plant metabolites screenings were performed by using various solvents systems of varying polarity of acetone, ethanol and ethylacetate extracts. In this examination the crude extracts showed the presence of flavonoids, carbohydrates, saponins, phlobatannins, Phenol, steroids and terpenoids while volatile oil, cum and mucilage were absent in all the solvents. On the other hand tannins were absent only in acetone extracted. The ethanolic leaf extract was tested against Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial pathogens. The extract showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Klepseilla pneumonia while no inhibitory activity against Bacillus subtilis. Thus, B. oleraceae leaves could be effective for prevention of bacterial infections and may be considered as an alternative to antibiotic regimens.
